Books..
I love books! For a couple of years I didnt read anything. My vision deteriorated and printed books quickly became impossible for me to read. Extremely depressing, as my all time favourite waste of time is a good story.
Well now, I’m lucky. Now there’s Audiobooks, and anyone that hasnt tried them yet, sighted or blind. you should!!, Great stories read TO you. you can close your eyes, sit back and just listen. or continue doing what needs to be done. dishes, cleaning, laundry. work that doesnt require too much brain power or concentration. Isnt that wonderful? Changing to audiobooks has caused quite a change in WHAT I read. I am still a Science fiction / Horror / Fantasy junkie but now I read many more genres and i enjoy it probably more than I should!
I’ve come across the odd book that surprised me, I thought those titles seemed horribly boring and I never gave them a thought. For instance: “Dantes inferno”. Ah, a classic. many will wonder where I’ve been all my litterary life, and I may have totally misunderstood it’s qualities. but IMO, as an audiobook with John Cleese as Narrator it was a hilarious experience, Very funny although so extremely horrible and full of misery. Not something i’d recommend for a kid or anyone closeminded or impatient. but hey. I enjoyed it, perhaps thanks to John Cleese.
Enough of that. Here are some recommendations from me. Books I enjoyed, both as printed books and AudioBooks. I’ll add short reviews on some, nothing serious, and this is only my opinion. But remember: If you dont read a book for your self, you’ll never know if you like it or not. and if you realize you really didnt. then maybe atleast you learned something from it
Dean R Koontz. Check out the Odd Thomas series and the taking. I will say no more.
Tad Williams. Just check him out!
“Dan Browne. The Da Vinci Code” (I listened to this in swedish) I loved this one, The story takes place in France and England, modern day. The superintendent at the Louvre musium in Paris is murdered in the museums Grand Gallerie, but before he dies he leaves a complex message on the floor and on himself. This starts a series of events in a fast paced story of Conspiracy, death, and hope. I especially enjoyed the many true facts intertwined in the action, Truth and theory about Leonardo DaVinci, Religious cults, secret societys and the Catholic church. Very interesting and captivating. Highly recommended.
(Have you ever taken a close look at Da Vinci's paintings??)
Harry Potter, The order of the phoenix (and of course the previous books) Do I even have to mention the author? I'm not going to analyze this one at all. It is the best Potter book so far. and the darkest by far. The audiobook is just amazing.
Terry Pratchett (Master of imagination) I recommend: The Carpet people What can I say? Extremely funny, imaginative and in a way a relaxing book to read. The carpet people are just that.. piople living in the carpet, theres demons in the floor, monsters in the underlay, the table leg mines, Fray that comes from above creating hell and havoc.(!) and a conflict between good and bad. What more do you need? Highly recommended as well as: “Mort” (Discworld) and ”Truckers”
Douglas Adams Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy (plus sequels and related books). This is an old favourite. the imagination here is out of this world! Yes, it is SF, kinda, but at the same time its simply an experience in mindblowing weirdness and horribly insane undeniable logic. It’s been years since i read these books and one of these days I will read them again. Do know: I rarely read a book twice! It has to have something very special!
Isac Asimov Arthur C Clarke (Most books, they are all an experience.), If you are one of those that thinks that SF is all about robots and space ships then maybe you should try out one of these two writers. They both show imagination, foresight, insight, hindsight..hehe. and VISION. There is so much more to it than green aliens and flying saucers. OK. If youre not the least interested in science in general, theories of future, astronomy, artificial intelligence or any of that then you may not enjoy them one bit. but what is the harm in trying one out?
I’ll be adding more on this page but for now, here are some of my favourite writers besides the ones listed above:
Robert Jordan (Fantasy ) Jennifer Roberson (Fantasy) Stephen King (Horror/fantasy and more) Dean R Koonts (Horror) Terry Brooks (Fantasy)
For now.. READ something. or LISTEN. A book gives you more than a movie any day!
Jen Currently reading BT Bradford ( Not a favourite, but what the hell)
